How To Know Universities That Accept Two O’level Sittings In Nigeria

One of the requirements for admission into any tertiary institution in Nigeria is to have at least five (5) credit passes in the relevant subjects. However, some students sit for these exams more than once to have the required passes. One of the most common scenes is for a student to have at least five credits without English or mathematics on the first attempt but pass either of the two subjects on the second attempt.

I heard of a student with eight credit passes on the first attempt but with a grade of F9 in English Language. So, in the second attempt, the focus is on passing only the English language. This is why student’s performance in the second attempt always falls below the first attempt. Let us assume the O’level results for the second attempt is four credit passes with English but Chemistry D7. Students with this kind of results will have to combine them. Such students can’t use the first one without English, and the second one can’t be used only without Chemistry.

It is acceptable to combine results in Nigeria. The country has only three examination bodies: WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB. You can combine WAEC and NECO results, but you can’t combine any of these with NABTEB. Also, aside from the May/June that WAEC and NECO organize, there is Nov/DEC, popularly known as GCE (General Certificate of Education). You can sit for the internal or external (GCE) and combine them. So far, they are conducted by WAEC or NECO.

Having laid the foundation for this article, I will explain whether your school of choice will accept two sittings. From experience, those who want to study Medicine and Surgery, Nursing, Law, and Engineering are always interested in this topic. Don’t worry; I will guide you through how you will know it.

Brochure

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) always makes a brochure available for every applicant during registration. This small magazine contains all the information about schools offering a particular course, their admission requirements, and special considerations (waivers). You will use this material to know if the course you want to study accepts two sittings.

For example, let us check Nursing from the brochure. The first image shows the schools offering the course with their O’level requirements.

The second image shows the special consideration. It is here that you will know whether you can combine results or not. For instance, Niger Delta University requires’0’ level credit passes at not more than two (2) Sittings, the University of Nigeria Nnsuka requires ‘0’ level credit passes or its equivalent at not more than two (2) sittings, FUTO requires at least five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology in not more than two (2) sittings, etc. The implication is that WAEC and NECO results can be combined for these schools.

For medicine and Surgery, the University of Benin, the University of Ibadan, ABSU, EBSU, UNIOSUN, COOU and BOWEN require the ‘O’ Level credit passes at one (1) sitting. In addition, the University of Ilorin requires five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in one sitting. However, Niger Delta University requires the O’ level credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings.

School Website

Most Universities and polytechnics have an official website listing the programs they offer and the admission requirements. You need to know the website URL and enter it into your browser. Once the page has opened, navigate to where the programs are and check for the requirements for your intended course. If you can use two sittings, it will be stated there. Any information you get on the website can’t contradict what is in the JAMB brochure.
