How To know If You Are Admitted By Universities Or Polytechnics In Nigeria

One of the dreams of students who just finished senior secondary education is to be offered admission by their choice institution. Before this dream can come to a reality, you must have passed your SSCE, JAMB, and PUTME. It is at this point you know you are very close to your dream.

What I have noticed is that most students are always eager to know their admission status after they have finished their PUTME screening. Not knowing that there are processes that go underground before the school sends the names of those admitted to JAMB. One of those processes is that the school will decide on the cut-off mark to use based on the available space they have.

For example, the available space for new intakes into computer science programme might be 100. The school will look into the performance of the applicants to draw the benchmark. The people in charge of the admission may decide to use a 70% score mark. The reason why they decided on the benchmark is that with that score, the available space, which is 100, will almost be filled based on the overall performance of applicants. This is why all applicants must remain patient during the admission process.

There are two ways you can know if you are offered admission or not, and I will discuss them in this article. They are through CAPS and the school portal. It is essential to know that there is no difference between the two. It is the school that will first give you admission before it is uploaded to CAPS. JAMB can’t give admission without the school first admitting you.

JAMB CAPS

Before this initiative, there were irregular or fake admissions. To know those candidates to whom the school offers admission and validate them, JAMB came up with this initiative. In a way, this has reduced the number of irregular admissions and also reduced overpopulation in schools. This CAPS is the medium that JAMB made for every applicant to accept or reject their admission. You won’t be able to take action on this portal if your school has yet to decide on your admission. This is why applicants see “admission in progress” on their portal.

The number of days it will take for your status to change can’t be assumed, as it depends on when your school sends the list to JAMB. However, the moment a decision is made and sent to JAMB, you will either see “admitted” or “not admitted.” If you are admitted, you will see a button that will instruct you to accept or reject the admission. In one of my articles, I discussed how you can access your status through the CAPS.

School Portal

Some schools may first show the status of applicants on their portal before directing them to visit the JAMB portal to accept. In contrast, others will instruct the applicants only to visit CAPS. This is why you should always visit the school website for information regarding your admission. It is possible to be admitted by the school without your status changing on the CAPS. Said differently, it is possible to see “admission in progress” while your school has offered you admission.

One primary reason you may be experiencing this is that the school has yet to send the list of those admitted to JAMB. If your school hasn’t notified JAMB, your status will remain the same. So, don’t fret when you experience this issue. Either you wait till it changes, or you inform the admission officer in your school of the problem. The only negative implication is that you are yet to be identified by JAMB as a student of the school, and you won’t be able to receive an admission letter from JAMB.
