Commonwealth Scholarships 2022/2023 For Masters and PhD

Application is now open for Commonwealth Scholarships 2022/2023 for both Master’s and PhD. Commonwealth Master’s and Commonwealth PhD Scholarships are for candidates from low and middle income Commonwealth countries, for full-time Master’s study and full-time doctoral study respectively at a UK university. 

These awards are offered under six development themes:

  • Science and technology for development
  • Strengthening health systems and capacity
  • Promoting global prosperity
  • Strengthening global peace, security and governance
  • Strengthening resilience and response to crises
  • Access, inclusion and opportunity

Eligibility for Commonwealth Scholarships for Master’s

To apply for these scholarships, you must:

  • Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
  • Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
  • Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2021
  • By October 2021, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)
  • Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship

Eligibility for Commonwealth Scholarships for PhD

To apply for these scholarships, you must:

  • Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
  • Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
  • Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2021
  • By October 2022, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)
  • NOT be registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, at a UK university before September/October 2022
  • Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship

How to Apply For Commonwealth Scholarships

  1. Check whether or not your Nominating Agency will be processing your application electronically. If so, you will be able to follow the progress of your application. There are three options available to Nominating Agencies – further details
  2. Print and send your application to your Nominating Agency, whether or not your Nominating Agency will be processing your application electronically.
  3. Wait when you have clicked on Submit at the end of your application. It can take up to three minutes for your application to be transferred to your Nominating Agency.
  4. Wait while downloading a PDF of your application. These PDFs can be up to 2 MB in size.
  5. Let your referees know in advance that they will each receive an email inviting them to complete their references electronically. This email is generated as soon as you submit your application.
  6. Let your potential supervisor(s) in the UK know in advance that they will each receive an email asking for a supporting statement. This email is generated as soon as you submit your application.

Your application must include the following supporting documentation by 16:00 (GMT) on 18th January 2021 in order for your application to be eligible for consideration:

  • Proof of citizenship or refugee status – uploaded to the online application system
  • Full transcripts detailing all your higher education qualifications (with certified translations if not in English) – uploaded to the online application system
  • References from at least two individuals – submitted directly by the referees to the online application system (referees will be sent an email request)
