The Scripps Spelling Bee is now in Nigeria for the first time in its 100-year history. It is open to Nigerian students aged 8–13, offering them an unparalleled opportunity to compete on a global stage alongside their peers. This initiative is made possible through the partnership between the Young Educators Foundation, Ghana, and the Lucid Education Initiative, Nigeria. Furthermore, the program is proudly supported by our title sponsor, Indomie Noodles, and co-sponsors, Checkers Custard.
Spell It Nigeria is a franchise of the internationally acclaimed Scripps National Spelling Bee (SNSB) in the USA. This is a literacy programme that teaches children how to:
- Improve their spelling
- Increase their vocabulary
- Learn and understand the concepts of words
- Develop language skills and usage
The maiden edition is open to schools across Nigeria until early October 2024. The schedule of the programme goes as follows:
- Phase 1: Sept-Oct 2024: Students between 8-13 years can enroll via our website.
- Phase 2: Oct-Nov 2024: Students are given access to the e-learning portal where they receive resources and are trained for the competition.
- Phase 3: Nov-Dec 2024: After their training, spellers get to spell onstage at this semi-final level. Qualified spellers make it to the National Finals
- Phase 4: January 2025: Qualified National Finalists will receive more training sessions virtually to prepare for the National Finals
- Phase 5: February 2025: Spellers compete for a chance to be declared Spell It Nigeria’s 1st ever champion!
- Phase 6: March-May 2025: The winner begins preparing for the Scripps Spelling Bee which takes place in Washington, D.C. in May/June 2025
The grand prize is an all-expense-paid trip to the United States for the ultimate winner to participate in the National competition in May 2025.
