courses offered at aust

The African University of Science and Technology (AUST) is the first of the Nelson Mandela Institutions (NMIs). It was established in Abuja, Nigeria, in 2007, as a centre of excellence in science and technology with a focus on African development. AUST currently offers post-graduate programs only.

At AUST Master’s degree is for 18 months, consisting of about 60% course work with the rest of the time devoted to high level research, most of which gets published; and 3 to 4 years for a full-time Ph.D. from which “A”-rated publications or patents are a co-requirement for graduation.

AUST now also offers a selection of 12-month “taught” Master’s programs, designed to equip students with very specific specialized skills. All the programs require a strong Mathematics background.

Below are the list of all courses offered at AUST and the admission requirements for both M.Sc. and Ph.D:

(1) Theoretical and Applied Physics

AUST offers a Master of Science (M.Sc.) program in Theoretical Physics as a first step in preparing students for a career in teaching and research, which is part of the training infused into the Ph.D. program. Following the MSc, students are expected to pursue a PhD at AUST under a sandwich program with the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP).

In addition to the basic courses, students are introduced to important and recent research areas in condensed matter theory, atomic and molecular physics, energy physics, biophysics, general relativity and cosmology.

(2) Pure and Applied Mathematics

(3) Petroleum Engineering

(4) Materials Science and Engineering

(5) Computer Science

The African University of Science and Technology (AUST) offers graduate level courses leading up to a Master of Science (MSc) and a Ph.D degrees in Computer Science.

In addition to the basic courses, students are introduced to important and current research areas in Artificial Intelligence, Visualization and High Performance Computing (HPC), Database and Information Systems, Architecture, Parallel Computing and Systems, as well as Scientific Computing.

The African University of Science and Technology has started M.Sc. by coursework which took effect from July, 2017. The University offers a 12-month M.Sc. Program by coursework only, in each of the three fields listed below.

Financial AID/Scholarships at African University of Science and Technology

In the first decade of its existence, every student who came to AUST was able to do so on a full scholarship, the result of dedicated fund-raising efforts to remain faithful to the original thought expressed by Nelson Mandela in support of the AUST, namely that no one with the ability to study and conduct valuable research should be prevented from doing so by lack of money.

AUST continues to find ways to continue on that path and, today, has a number of programs committed to supporting young women who wish to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) by providing full scholarships for study at both the Master’s and doctoral levels. New initiatives to support post-doctoral activities are now also underway.
