Candidates Performance Rate In 2024 UTME

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the performance of students who participated in the 2024 UTME. This was announced yesterday, April 29, 2024. The results that were released do not look satisfactory, as the number of candidates who scored below 200 is significantly high.

Before the commencement of the examination, JAMB announced the number of candidates who registered for the exam. It was on record that 1,989,668 candidates registered for the exercise. Out of this number, 80,810 were absent from the exercise.

From the report I obtained, 1.8 million results were released; out of this number, 1.4 million candidates scored below 200. This is a whopping 78% failure rate. I see it as a failure because the total score obtainable in JAMB is 400, so if a candidate can’t score average (50%, which is 200), it means such a candidate is below the average. In a nutshell, the result of this year’s UTME is not good.

Also, candidates who scored 300 and above are 8401, which is 0.47% of the released results. Those that had 250 and above were 77,070 (4.3%). Lastly, candidates who scored 200 and above were 439974 (24%).

Parents, teachers, and the government should look into the causes of poor academic performance, especially this year’s UTME, and see how to improve the success rate.
